Licorice Root: My Go-To Ingredient for Calm, Bright, Even Skin

When it comes to skincare ingredients that I reach for again and again, licorice root extract is easily one of my favorites.

Because it works gently, effectively, and beautifully on all skin types.

Why I Love Licorice Root in Skincare

Licorice root is one of those ingredients that checks every box, especially for the type of skin concerns I treat most in the treatment room.

It’s:

  • Calming

  • Soothing

  • Brightening

  • Safe for sensitive and acne-prone skin

And most importantly it helps address pigmentation without causing more inflammation, which is key.

A Personal Favorite Since the Beginning

Licorice isn’t something I just recently started using it’s actually been a favorite of mine since before becoming an Esthetician.

One of the first products I fell in love with was the Acwell Licorice Toner, and I remember being so impressed with how brightening and calming it was on the skin.

Since then, I’ve continued to incorporate licorice into my treatments and routines in more advanced ways like using the Michelle Corley Licorice Booster, which I love for its targeted brightening and soothing benefits.

It’s one of those ingredients that has stayed consistent in my approach because it works.

A Gentle but Powerful Tyrosinase Inhibitor

One of the biggest reasons I love licorice root is because it’s a tyrosinase inhibitor.

That means it helps slow down the production of melanin (pigment) in the skin.

Why does that matter?

Because excess melanin is what leads to:

  • Dark spots

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)

  • Uneven skin tone

Licorice helps prevent and fade discoloration without the irritation that many brightening ingredients can cause.

Perfect for Acne + Sensitive Skin

If you’re acne-prone, you already know anything too aggressive can make things worse.

Licorice root contains compounds like glabridin, which help:

  • Reduce redness

  • Calm inflammation

  • Support healing

This makes it ideal for:

  • Active breakouts

  • Post-acne marks

  • Clients who can’t tolerate benzoyl peroxide or stronger actives

Why It Works for All Skin Types

This is one of the biggest reasons I use it so often in treatments and recommend it for home care.

Licorice is:

  • Gentle enough for sensitive skin

  • Supportive for acne-prone skin

  • Effective for pigmentation concerns

It doesn’t strip the skin or compromise the barrier which is everything when we’re trying to heal.

My Philosophy on Brightening Ingredients

Not all brightening ingredients are created equal.

Some work fast but can be at the cost of irritation.

Others (like licorice) work with your skin, not against it.

And that’s my goal:

Healthy, calm skin first results that actually last.

Final Thoughts

If you’re dealing with redness, sensitivity, acne, or dark spots and it feels like everything is “too much” for your skin…

Licorice root might be exactly what your routine is missing.

It’s one of those ingredients that quietly transforms the skin over time

gently, safely, and effectively.
